Englophone (+ŋglofon) is an alphabet I created in early 2024. I compiled a list of the 33 main phonemes (distinct sounds of speech) in English (or at least, my accent of General American English).

Most of the symbols are the same as in the regular alphabet that you are familiar with (the Roman alphabet), though there are some real letters that are not in the Roman alphabet and even a few that I made myself for gaps that did not have their own distinct symbol.

The 33 letters each correspond to exactly one phoneme in the English language, and the alphabet is sorted by letter type (i. e. plosives, nasals, vowels, etc.), rather than have the letters all mixed up like how they are in the Roman alphabet.

I have sorted the letters into six groups. (The groups are sorted by color; the dark-green and off-white letters in the third row are one group, split in two to show voiced vs. unvoiced sounds.)

I made a YouTube video about my Englophone alphabet in May 2024, and it did fairly well. But there were a few glaring inaccuracies in that video (for instance; yes, the Russian alphabet does actually have lowercase letters and no, /w/ and /j/ are not liquids), and I had improved the alphabet materially, and so I made a follow-up video in January 2025.

Looking back on it almost a year and a half later (as of May 2026), I believe the IPA outshines Englophone in several important ways (for one, Unicode support), but I may revisit this alphabet at some point to give it a refresh.
